Plywood consists of several thin layers of wood which are glued with grains crosswise to each other. Plywood has a clear advantage over other wood based panels especially where thin cross sections are required and the loads are high. However, drying of veneer, processing of solid wood core layers and the pressing of these combustible materials into plywood panels hold various risks of fire. The byproduct of these processes, combustible dust, is especially explosive.
The main hazardous areas in plywood production are dryers, press, saws, and sanders. Defective machine parts and overheating can generate ignition sources in the form of sparks or embers.
