Scrap tires are a difficult waste material due to their quantity, form, structure, non- decomposability and flammability. Because of the additives contained in tires, dumping of scrap tires is prohibited in most states and many other countries. Scrap tires must be recycled. In the recycling process of scrap tires, metal, rubber and textiles are separated. The comminution, milling, separation and screening processes hold a high risk of fire. The byproduct of these processes, combustible dust, is especially explosive.
When milling and comminuting these combustible materials, individual sparks or hot particles are sufficient for an ignition into a fire or exploion. Defective machine parts, foreign objects or high process temperatures can also produce hazardous conditions in conveying systems and downstream process areas.
